A knock at the solar door startled Rosamund. She looked up from her meal.

"Do not worry, lass, it is my squire returning to take the wee beast outside for some fresh air."

"Do you care for dogs?" she asked the knight.

"Aye. I had my own hound, a good solid hunting dog far larger than the wee beast in your arms, but he grew old and died."

"I'm sorry," she said. His expression softened when he talked of his own beast. Perhaps he wasn't all bad for he seemed more interested in baiting than raping her. She forced herself to swallow the last piece of meat, though it sat like a lump in her throat. "Thank you for feeding Lilly. It's…it's good of you." The words rushed from her lips.

The knight stood. "You need to understand I'll do anything I have to, to defend Scotland, but the only beast at this table is the one you hold."

True. He hadn't hurt her. But would he? "I love her. She's all I have." She's the only one who cares about me. Rosamund stroked Lilly's head taking comfort in her soft fur.

"You do not know me yet." He raised his eyebrows expectantly.

"What do you mean?" For a moment, she swore his eyes were gleaming. She blinked and looked again wondering if it was a trick of the light but they'd resumed their serious expression.

"Perhaps you will grow to enjoy my company, Lady Rosamund."

She watched as he wiped his eating knife on a cloth. "You are my captor. I do not wish to enjoy you." Her mind wandered to when he had dressed her. His touch had been surprisingly gentle. A shiver of pleasure passed through her. She hadn't expected to like it.

"But you will, Rosamund. For we'll be sharing this bed." He held out his hands for her dog.

She knew desire when she saw it and she saw no way out of her situation. Without his armor, the knight was not so foreboding. Though his face remained stern, his full, sensuous mouth gentled his face. He was freshly shaven, which was rare in the land where men wore their hair to their shoulders and their faces bearded. He had a strong body suited for war with wide shoulders, muscly arms and long legs. Her only hope of survival lay through this man. Why would he not trade her for ransom?

Lilly whined and she realized her fingers were digging into the animal's ribcage. She bent and kissed her head. Rosamund stood and brought Lilly to him. "Take care, she bites strangers."

The knight took the dog except Lilly didn't bite him. Instead, she sniffed and licked his hand with alacrity.

"Lilly!" Rosamund said.

The knight looked down and smiled and she noticed how merriment transformed his face to that of a handsome man.

"It seems I have won the dog over." He carried the animal to the door, opened it and passed her out. "Take this beast. It has been fed but needs time outside. Treat it with care for the lady's happiness depends upon it.
